Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is observed annually on the third Thursday of May to raise awareness about the need for digital accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities.

In an increasingly digital world, access to technology is essential for education, employment, communication, and everyday life. GAAD serves as a reminder that digital tools, websites, apps, and content should be designed to be usable by everyone, including the over one billion people globally who experience some form of disability.

Accessibility is about removing barriers—whether visual, auditory, physical, or cognitive—that prevent people from fully participating in society. It involves thoughtful design features like keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, closed captions, clear language, and inclusive user experiences. This year, GAAD emphasizes collaboration across sectors, encouraging developers, educators, employers, and governments to adopt inclusive practices and ensure that people with disabilities are actively involved in the design and feedback process.

On this important day, let us all take a step toward making the world more inclusive. Whether through learning more about accessibility, testing digital products for usability, or advocating for policy changes, each action contributes to a more equitable society. Accessibility is not just about compliance—it’s about dignity, opportunity, and respect for all. Together, we can create environments—both digital and physical—where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
